SEEK FOR HELP, YOU ARE NOT ALONE

From the 26th to the 28th day of September 2023, the Guidance Office conducted an activity for Suicide Prevention Month with the theme, “Seek for Help, You Are Not Alone”. The activity aims to raise awareness and provide important information about ways to address psychosocial issues and concerns, as well as promote mental wellness in the students. Supposedly, the activity should have happened on the 22nd day of September, however, there was an unexpected suspension of classes due to the volcanic smog caused by Taal Volcano, which led to the rescheduling of the activity.

On the first day, early in the morning, the guidance team set up all the materials to be used in the booth. The guidance booth contains the following activities: freedom wall which is named as “Wall of Hope”, there was also coloring of bookmarks, a photo booth, distribution of flyers, as well as box of treasures that consisted of a number of responses from other students who participated in “Dear Future Self” and “Share the best thing you said to someone” activity. As the booth was ready, at first, some students were wondering what the booth was, and some students were confused about what event were happening at that time. Therefore, the guidance team decided to approach the students to participate and let them know that the activities were intended for them. As a result, students started to participate around lunchtime since that was the only free time for most of them as they were preparing for their first day of examinations. Most of the students who participated on the first day were from the College Department as they were the ones who were on the campus for their classes and examinations.

The next day, the 27th day of September, an unexpected number of students participated in the booth. Most of them were from Junior and Senior High School Departments. Most of the high school students had fun coloring their bookmarks at the booth. Aside from that, a lot of groups of friends enjoyed taking pictures in the photo booth section. On the last day of the activity, some students just finished most of their examinations which led them to participate more in the activity, especially in the freedom wall where they expressed their thoughts, wishes, and a lot more.

Despite the unexpected circumstances experienced during the implementation of the activity, these did not hinder students from participating and engaging in the activities prepared for them. There were also students who were looking forward to this kind of activity happening again as most students had a great time expressing themselves freely and safely.

CAREER ORIENTATION PROGRAM

Be Future Ready: Explore your Career Option with DMMCIHS

The Guidance Office has made a bold move of initiating an in-house career orientation and simulation-laboratory exposure that was intended for the grade 12 students. Basically, it was proposed to have a platform to market the DMMCIHS’ college program offerings and at the same time this can be a great venue to promote student retention. Who would not want to make the students stay with us, right?

The program started with a prayer, singing of the Philippine National Anthem, and Welcoming Remarks by the High School Principal, Mr., Antonio Lira Jr., Shortly, the host introduced the first speaker which was Sir Jayson Castro, Program Chair of BS Physical Therapy. It is important to note that Sir Jayson did a great job in setting the mood for the students, he was very engaging and entertaining. It was followed by Sir Jun Laude of BS Radiological Technology, Doc Jon Paul Reyes of BS Medical Technology, Ms. Jessie Biscocho of BS Psychology, Ms. Hazel Hernandez (on behalf of Ms. Vanessa Domingo) of BS Business Administration, Ms. Connie Malana of BS Elementary Education, and Sir Clark Joy Barias of BS Nursing. Indeed, it was a very valuable, insightful, and meaningful career orientation. To cap off the morning session, Sir Alj Tolentino, OSAS Manager, gave the students a glimpse of the scholarship grants that are offered here in DMMCIHS. The students were sent to lunch and were instructed to be back five (5) minutes before 1:00 PM.

At 1:00 PM the host discussed the flow of the afternoon activity. She introduced the students to their Tour Managers which were Ms. Desa, Ms. Aena, Sir Alj, and Ms. Jesa. They proceeded to their simulation, lecture, and laboratory exposure activity which they enjoy the most. At this point, the Guidance Office have received a number of good feedbacks from the students, and we hope that this gave them the knowledge and information that can be beneficial to them before they enter their college journey.

POST-VALENTINE’S DAY SEMINAR: Pouring from a Filled Cup

Just in time for the celebration of the heart’s day, the DMMC Institute of Health and Sciences, organized by the Guidance Office, held its Post-Valentine’s Day seminar last February 16, 2023, at DMMCIHS’ gymnasium. This program aims to impart knowledge to the students when it comes to taking care of themselves particularly with their mental and emotional well-being.

The said seminar commenced with a short welcoming message from Miss Jessie DL Bischocho, RPm. The program was divided into two (2) topics. First are about Psychosocial Issues in the Academe which was discussed by Miss Maria Rochelle R. Sasuya, RGC, PhD (cand.) and the Self-Care seminar which was tackled by Miss Kezia Nica M. Bogay, MAEd, RGC. These topics were deemed relevant, timely, and essential to the students to attain a healthy emotional and mental state.

Miss Sasuya started her talk entitled “Be Careful with your Mental Health, by engaging the students with question: “How are you?”. She encouraged every student by ensuring that their feelings are valid. She conversed with them about how they feel and what they can do to address intense emotions that they are experiencing at the moment and the moment after. Also, the speaker had administered a Perceived Stress Scale to the students to measure how stressed they are at the time of the seminar. She also talks through about the common Psychosocial Issues that are leading in the field of the academe today. She mentioned about stress, depression, and anxiety while putting an emphasis on their differences. She also gave advises on how to manage and eventually overcome these kinds of adversities that life throws on a day-to-day basis.

It was followed by the second seminar which was entitled, “Pouring from a Filled Cup” presented by Miss Bogay, the seminar was focused about understanding self-care and its importance. Its main objective is awareness raising about how to execute and incorporate self-care in everyday routine. She also discussed that self-care can be found in different types of such as: physical, social, mental, emotional and spiritual self-care. She encouraged the students to have an opportunity to practice a self-care activity or routine once in a while so that they will be able preserve themselves in which by doing so they can also be of help to others who are going through something tough. Fortunately, the students were still participative even though there were uncontrollable instances – unpleasant weather condition – during the program.

Regrettably, the Post-Valentine’s Celebration was cut short due to a bad weather condition, but still, the objectives of the program was served which are the importance of taking care of ones’ self and well-being. Moreover, Practicing self-care and knowing how to manage emotions can lead to a more fulfilledmeaningful life and a genuinely happy individual that can always fill others’ cup without feeling empty because theirs are quite full already.
